Motor Trend Import Car of the Year
Stage 3 – Prep for Paint
"1970
Import Car Of The Year" by MotorTrend. June
1970. Read the reprint article
here. This car was
awarded to Mr. Crump in 1970. Automobile Atlanta
currently
owns
this car
and is
preparing it for our collection in our museum.
Typical rear trunk rust from the leaking 914 tail light
bodies. Notice the original stamped Karmann body number.
This is stamped into all 914s and matches the plate number
in the front of the drivers door jamb. And we thought that
the jack post looked ok until it was Media blasted! The
foam packing sound deadening in the back of the rear deck
lid coupled to the wet trunk from the leaking tail light
housings causes even the most rust free 914 to rust the
rear trunk lid underneath!
Beautiful original paint marred by rust. We will have to
refinish under the lid on this one to make it look right.
Great idea to install an extra seal strip on the door of
these 914 top off cars! Bad idea to install these door seals
in a channel that automatically collects water!!!!! This
one is not so bad though. Back of the left door actually
has a hole rusted through in this shot. One can never see
this damage until the seal is removed and the area brushed.
Beautiful original paint door jamb marred by the rust on
the ledge where the outer rocker was installed typical jack
post rust but not too bad. Just a cover will fix this one.
Very very minor rust on the underside of this car but there
anyway and of course because of it we will need to paint
the bottom of the door!
Typical rust in the hood seal area (notice the way we have
already repaired the gutter area with some new metal. Next
we will cut out and fabricate the new panel for the headlight
eyebrow grommets.Cowl rust again caused by water sitting.
Notice the butched antenna hole. The kid who punched this
hole on the dealer showroom floor should have been shot!
We will weld up and drill properly and install an original
hirschman collapsible antenna. Rust in the pass cowl area
but not too bad
