Weekend Twelve

Time to fit the 993 mirrors and update our extreme makeover to the 21st century. I am not the first person with this idea, but with no measurements in hand I needed to make templates and detailed instructions. No need to invent the wheel except for the first time. We took the assembled mirrors out to our graveyard of 914s and found a couple of door candidates for our fitting.

We made a temporary template, McLean was vital in this process since he has done this before. We took our template and matched it on the doors, transferred our marks and then began drilling holes (don't tell Dr. 914! He'll kill us for doing this to any door).
McLean recommends an air drill for getting through the doors. A 0.75 inch hole is required to fit the hardware of the mirror into the door for securement. This is going to make you nervous. I was nervous and this was only a graveyard car for our experiment. You won't have to worry as much as you can get detailed instructions from us including a template with all the appropriate measurements insurring you only have to measure twice and cut once.
Then we took our assembled mirrors and fit them on the car. I sat in the car and took a look. The driver mirror fit and worked great. We measured and measured again to make sure our directions would be clear.
The passenger side mirror is a different story. One reason is that 914s rarely have a passenger side mirror. The correct measurement is 7.5 inches back from the edge of the door. Using this measurement insures that you retain the whole use of the mirror without losing any field of vision.
This is where the measurements get subjective. I think the mirror looks better and is more symettrical when 6.75" back from the door on the passenger side. I think you have to do this for yourself. Either way, our installation instructions will help with your update.
All the fitting was finally done with the graveyard volunteer!!
Next, we fitted the mirrors on the actual extreme car. You can see that our template made some advancement.
Again we marked the holes and began drilling.
We did a visual inspection at each step.
One mirror and one hole at a time.
The mirrors look great from the front and the back. Some angles they will look symetrical and some they don't. If this is an issue for you, I suggest putting two factory mirrors on the car.
The mirror update kit is not for everyone. I also think that flares help pull this look off. If you don't have flares you may think the mirrors look big on the car. I like them either way, but with the flares the mirror addition really gives the car some bite.
Finally the mirrors are dry-fitted on the car. This is a great mirror update for your 914.
