Weekend Thirteen

Now it is time for the double grilled engine lid. We have a couple of examples of these grilles in our showroom. The one that Dr. 914 is a fan of is the engine lid on the Porsche 916. On this lid the grill material is overlaid in the center and the material covers the whole engine lid. The underside of the engine lid just under the grill is also black. It is a good look and the norm on 914s.

I elected to have the underside of my engine lid the same white color as the car. Then when I cover it with the GT grill material and silver PORSCHE lettering on the grill, the whole thing should POP!! I am modling this after the "last six" and the grill material will not overlap, but will be in an upper piece and a lower piece. We sell the grill material for you to do it yourself or if you wish, you can purchase a comlete GT Double Grilled Engine Lid that is based on the 916.
If you like the extreme lid you can buy that too. When doing this lid, the original material is kept and reused. The metal is cut from the upper part of the lid and you should leave about 1/2 inch of metal for the upper grill material to attach to. With all the grill material removed, now is the time to paint the lid, the grill material is reattached using pop rivets. Upper right photo shows the old mirror holes n the driver door welded over and wiped.
Left you can see the new trunk hinge cup that had to be installed before the rear decklid would fit properly. Due to the weight issue, we removed the rear springs for the decklid. Above you can see the new fiberglass front hood has arrived. We have gone back and forth on this issue of metal versus fiberglass and in the end the fiberglass won out. I could not resist saving the weight, since we added so much weight to the car already.
Here you can see McLean and Garett fit the fiberglass hood onto the car, which fits great. As with any fiberglass piece there is going to be some fitting, but this is a quality piece and fits nicely.
For the underside of the hood, we are considering filling in the space between the braces with carpeting, but that is another day. There was also a little more wiping to be done on the door. I wasn't happy with the gap on the passenger side - so we revisited that issue once again.
