1. Jack the car under the engine mounting
bar and the front cross member and rest on jack stands situated
under the four jacking donuts at the corners of the floor
pan.
2. Remove the front suspension/steering rack
cover.
3. Disconnect battery and drain the fuel tank.
The tank can easily be drained at the access hole under
the fuel tank. Simply disconnect one of the fuel lines.
4. To aid in installation, remove the gas
tank and fresh air blower overflow tubes for better visual
access. (If you do not want to remove the tank, you must
remove the two lower fuel tank lines through the access
hole.)
5. Remove the fuel pump, mounts, fuel filter
and all rubber/cloth fuel line, connecting the bulkhead
plastic hoses to engine compartment plastic hoses.
6. Install the two fuel lines to the fuel
tank. (One line is larger than the other. The large (9mm)
line is the delivery line and the small (7mm) line is the
return routing to fuel pressure regulator.) One is 6
& one is 8.
NOTE: The large line is the delivery line, routing to cylinder
number 3 (right injector rail) and the small one is the
return routing to the fuel pressure regulator (left drivers
rear engine compartment).
7. Cut the fuel pump plug leaving 3"
of lead to be later spliced. Install four tube connectors
on each of the stripped wire ends.
8. Remove the shifter carpeting, the wooden
drivers pedal board, the steel access plate and the center
box or cushion.
9. Drill a 1/4" hole at the front, near
the cluster assembly 1/2" from rear brake steel hydraulic
line and feed harness through to front.
10. Drill 2 holes for fuel pump mounts (see
diagram) from under car.
NOTE: Fuel pump mounting holes must put fuel pump high enough
to clear pan and avoid steering rack.
11. Assemble fuel lines to pump (see diagram)
.
NOTE: Fuel line lengths are approximate, please adjust before
cutting!
12. Mount fuel pump using new hose clamps.
13. Crimp harness in rear, brown to black
and black with red to red; crimp harness in front to fuel
pump plug, red to positive (black and red), and black to
negative (brown).
14. Refill tank with one gallon of gasoline
and test for leaks.
15. Reassemble all parts.
16. Congratulations! You have solved the vapor
lock problem!
