Eventually you hear a metallic screeching noise that is a sure sign that your starters bendix mechanism, bearings or solenoid are kaput. When ordering a new starter be sure to check the rubber cap on the terminal for cracks which allows moisture in and it is a good idea to check your starters hardware as well.
